The bearded head

The beard drops the lower edge below the line of the head. That gives a longer cutting edge without much extra weight, and leaves room to choke up behind the head for close work like feathering kindling or shaping a tent peg. The pattern comes from Norse farms, where every household kept a wood axe for exactly these jobs.

• Splitting and preparing kindling at camp

Looking after it

Wipe the head dry after use and give it a light coat of oil before it goes back in the sheath. High-carbon steel holds a good edge but will rust if it's put away wet.
